Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has tied up with Maxima Digital/Techno Sat Comm Consortium to offer free high-speed Wi-Fi services on Metro Trains for the first time in India. The service covers all stations and trains that ply on the Airport Express Line that connects New Delhi Railway Station in the heart of the capital to the buzzing T3 Terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport. The free Wi-Fi service has begun for the commuters today.
The Wi-Fi project of the Delhi Metro is built and operated by the Consortium managed by Maxima Digital Pvt. Ltd. Maxima Digital partnered with Russian technology company MaximaTelecom. MaximaTelecom is the creator and operator of Europe’s largest public transportation Wi-Fi network that includes Moscow and St. Petersburg Metros with over 11 mln daily riders.
The Delhi Metro, in association with Rail Tel Corporation presently provides Wi-Fi facility at four of its major stations – Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat and Hauz Khas.
Talking about this first-of-its-kind venture in India, Farhad Rustamov, Maxima Digital, commented, “To provide streamlined Wi-Fi experience to consumers travelling on the Airport Express Line of Delhi Metro, we have laid down 24 Km Fiber with 44 base stations and other active equipment to ensure that at no point in time, internet connectivity is lost. All trains on this route will have radios to connect to designated networks and each compartment will have a wireless network access point for passengers to sign on to. After this launch, we will be looking at covering the entire growing DMRC Network with High-Speed Wi-Fi Services.”
To avail this service, passengers just need to log on to the Wi-Fi network “METROWIFI_FREE” and enjoy all trip long internet applications like YouTube, Facebook, Google Search, Whatsapp, video and audio internet calls. According to the law, during the first connection, any user must go through a fast identification process using a phone number.
After the launch, India will be the first country in the South Asian region and among just a few countries worldwide to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity to passengers travelling in underground trains.
