The main reason for people to buy Nexus Devices (Smartphone and Tablets) is to be the first one’s to get the latest update from Google. This year Google released Android N preview for some Nexus devices. In Google I/O 2011, Google initially tried to get its partners to provide software updates for their devices for at least 18 months. Below we have listed the devices that are getting updates from Google.
These devices get the latest version of Android directly from Google:
- Nexus 5X
- Nexus 6P
- Nexus 6
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 9
- Nexus 7
- Nexus 10
Nexus devices receive:
- Android version updates
For at least two years from when the device became available on the Google Store. - Security patches
For the longer of 3 years from availability or 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device.
Here is the list of all devices that are getting updates currently-
Nexus 6P | September 2017 |
Nexus 5X | September 2017 |
Nexus 9 | October 2016 |
Nexus 6 | October 2016 |
Nexus 5 | October 2015 |
Nexus 7 (2013) | July 2015 |
Nexus 10 | November 2014 |
Both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are guaranteed Android updates until September 2017, while the Nexus 9’s guaranteed updates will last until October 2016. For Nexus 6 Android N will be the last official update from Google. Nexus 5, Nexus 7(2013) tablet which received the Android Marshmallow last year from Google will also not gett any software updates from now on. But they will continue to get security updates every month for some times now.
Also for first generation Android One devices – Spice Dream Uno, Micromax Canvas A1 and Karbonn Sparkle V1 Android N will be the last update.
