WeChat has recently announced that it has reached 549 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally* a significant jump compared to the 500 million user milestone achieved three months ago in Q4 2014.
Focusing on India specifically, as per GWI’s study, In India there has been a 113% increase in the number of people utilizing mobile messaging tools since 2013 wherein smartphones are vital to Internet users in India, where 79% of the online population own a smartphone. The study further quotes that in November 2014, the active user base in India has grown by 2364% from Q1 2013 to Q3 2014 and is expected to continue expanding in future as WeChat introduces more exciting new app features that enhance its subscribers’ mobile experiences. The app is most popular with young demographic of age between 16 to 34 years old, and this age group dominates more than 80% of the WeChat user base.
