What could have been another April Fool Prank by +Google turned out be the best gift to mankind, ok email users part of the mankind. Jokes apart, Google gave us the best gift ever in Gmail on 1st April 2004. 

It was not just another email, it was an email evolution and is still evolving after 9 years.

Let’s visit Gmail’s journey from 1st April 2004 – 1st April 2013:

April 1 2004 – Gmail launches as invite only beta. First webmail to be built on Ajax with 1gb storage, threaded conversations and more.

April 1 2005 – Happy First Birthday Gmail, as a present Google gives 2GB storage to its users.

December 16 2005 – Gmail comes for the mobile web.

February 7, 2006 – Gmail offers chat

April 12, 2006 – Google calendar launches


May 1, 2006 – Gmail now available in 40 languages

February 14, 2007 – Google makes Gmail available for all ends invite only

October 31, 2007 – Gmail becomes the first email service to provide IMAP for free

September 15, 2008 – Gmail saves you the embarrassment by adding ‘Forgotten attachment detector’

October 22, 2008 – Gmail gets its first android app

November 11, 2008 – Video chat on Gmail launched

January 29, 2009 – Access mail on a plane (anywhere) with offline Gmail 

March 19, 2009 – Save me the horror, Gmail comes with ‘Undo Send’

July 7, 2009 – Gmail finally leaves BETA

August 30, 2010 – Priority Inbox : Manage your mail better

February 10, 2011 – Gmail get even more secure with 2-step verification

November 1, 2011 – As a part of the redesign, Gmail gets a new look

November 16, 2011 – Gmail app comes to iOS, iPhone & iPad users rejoice

April 24, 2012 – Your inbox gmail grows to 10GB, remember the 1GB days?

June 28, 2012 – Gmail is now being used by 425 million users

July 30, 2012 – Forget one-on-one chat, G+ Hangouts come to gmail

November 19, 2012 – Gmail now available in 58 language and counting

November 27, 2012 – Goodbye attachments, now attach files using Google Drive

March 28, 2013 – Multitasking compose experience 

April 1, 2013 – Gmail turns 9 and we all thank God that it wasn’t a prank 😉
